Doctoral Researcher Position in the project Being Affected by Social Robots (RoboAffect)

The Faculty of Social Sciences in Tampere University is currently looking for a motivated and talented applicant for a Doctoral Researcher Position in the project Being Affected by Social Robots (RoboAffect). The position will be filled for a fixed-term period of 3 years from the beginning of August 2021.

Job description

The RoboAffect project is funded by the Academy of Finland and the research is conducted in the Human Information Processing Laboratory operating under the Psychology programme at the Faculty of Social Sciences. In the project, we will investigate basic affective responses and feelings related to satisfaction of social needs elicited by interaction with social robots. We will focus on a fundamental form of social interaction: making eye contact. In the first part of the project, we will investigate, both in adult participants and in young infants, whether eye contact with a social robot will elicit similar psychophysiological responses as eye contact with another human. In the second part of the project, we will investigate whether a social robot’s gaze direction can influence human partners’ feelings related to social inclusion versus exclusion, and whether social contact with a robot can have “healing power” on negative feelings resulting from being socially excluded. A small amount of teaching (maximum of 5% of total annual working time) is also expected from the doctoral researcher. The hired candidate is expected to work towards completion of a PhD degree under the supervision of Professor Jari Hietanen.

You have a Master’s degree or an equivalent higher university degree in Psychology or a related field that is relevant for the research topic. You have the motivation and competence to carry out goal-oriented research and to pursue post-graduate studies and complete a doctoral degree. You are proficient in English, both written and spoken.

Experience in the field of psychophysiology and programming are considered an advantage. Proficiency in the Finnish language is also appreciated.

If selected to the position, you are expected to apply for post-graduate studies in the Faculty of Social Sciences Doctoral Program at Tampere University (unless already a PhD student at the university). More information on the admission process and requirements is available here. In case you are not already enrolled in the doctoral program at the time when the contract starts, your position will first be a Researcher position, which will be changed to a Doctoral Researcher position once you have been accepted to the doctoral program.

Candidates are selected based on the level of promise that they show, and this will be evaluated on the basis of their motivation letter, their previous success in their studies and merits in writing their thesis and / or scientific publishing.
