We are now seeking an Assistant Professor or Associate Professor in the field of Urban Physics

The position is placed in the Faculty of Built Environment where we work towards creating a sustainable built environment. We conduct high-quality scientific and applied research in the fields of architecture and civil engineering and provide higher education based on this research. Our unique research environment promotes collaboration and innovations and opens opportunities to pursue new avenues of multidisciplinary research and education.   

The research interests of our faculty and staff cover a wide variety of topics relating to the built environment. We carry out research in close collaboration with our external stakeholders. Our research not only meets international standards of excellence but also delivers practical benefits, thereby making a significant positive impact on the broader society. The utilisation and development of the built environment has a central role in building economically, ecologically and socially sustainable societies. Research will be conducted in profiling area of Sustainable Transformation of Urban Environments (STUE).

Job description

The tenure track position in Urban Physics covers research and education activities related to the the science and engineering of physical processes in urban areas. Urban physics is an interdisciplinary field addressing societal challenges such as climate change, energy, health, pollution, equity, security, mobility and aging in the context of cities and its implications for human health and well-being, biodiversity, resource flows and climate policy. It refers to the indoor and outdoor urban environment and interconnections at multiple scales (i.e. individual buildings through to building stock, city, regional, national and even global scale).  While this position is research-oriented it includes some teaching responsibilities, which are mainly connected to the international Sustainable Urban Development degree programme.

We are looking for an ambitious scholar with a doctoral degree and research merits from a relevant field. Your research interests could include some of the following themes: urban heat island effects, microclimate, urban metabolisms, resource flows, future climate change adaptations, carbon neutral society, equitable transition, behaviour modelling, urban energy simulations and predictive models, energy simulation of building stocks at regional or national scale, air pollution, CO2, urban population health, smart cities, performance of complex urban systems, and interconnections of any of these with population health and policy implications at different scales. Evidence of an inter-disciplinary approach and working at the interface of people, buildings and the city is desirable.

 Requirements   

 Assistant Professor   

 We require:   

  • applicable doctoral degree;   

  • ability to undertake independent scholarly activity and potential to pursue scholarly activity at a high international level of excellence;     

  • teaching skills required to successfully perform the duties and functions of the position.  

In addition, a track record of post-doctoral international publications will be considered an advantage.

Associate Professor   

 We require:   

  • applicable doctoral degree;  

  • track record of independent scholarly activity;   

  • teaching skills required to successfully perform the duties and functions of the position;    

  • ability to lead a research group and acquire external funding;   

  • track record of international scholarly activity.    

In addition, a track record of international peer-reviewed publications, international research collaboration and successfully finished projects will be considered an advantage. 

We offer   

Initial appointment as an assistant professor and associate professor will be for five years. Subject to successful performance, you will become a tenured faculty member at the end of the first five-year period. You will be well supported throughout the five-year period to ease your transition to a tenured position. Please read more about the tenure track career system at Tampere University. Salaries are based on the job demands and employees’ personal performance in accordance with the Finnish University Salary System. The starting salary range will be from €4,000 to €4,600/month for an assistant professor, from €4,600 to €5,300/month for an associate professor. A higher salary may be agreed upon based on the successful candidate’s experience and/or performance.
