Nanophotonics group conducts experimental research on fabrication of photonic nanostructures and develops unconventional nanofabrication methods. The Faculty of Engineering and Natural Sciences (ENS) is a leading research institution in nanoscience in Finland and hosts a well-equipped cleanroom dedicated to nanofabrication. 

Job description

We offer a position for a Research assistant in developing polymer waveguides for biosensing. The position is connected with an EU-project REAP, which is developing imaging systems across multiple scales to reveal drug tolerant persister cells. Our task is developing an extremely sensitive micro-ring resonator-based detector for photo-acoustic imaging. The work comprises design and realization of optical coupling to the waveguide components including the micro ring and optical characterization. The position is supervised by Assoc. Prof. Tapio Niemi and it is placed at the Laboratory of Photonics within the Physics Unit of ENS. This position is suitable for preparing a M. Sc. thesis. 


We are looking for a highly motivated candidates who are interested in optics or photonics, physics, electrical engineering, or related subjects. Previous experience or studies related to optical waveguides and integrated optics, optical measurement techniques and numerical modeling is beneficial. 

The position also requires:

  • Good English language skills (spoken and written)
  • Ability to conduct systematic scientific research
  • Ability to work in a team and communicate clearly in a multidisciplinary and international environment

The positions will be filled for a fixed-term period of a six months. The starting date will be mutually agreed upon. 

The salary will be based on both the job requirements and the employee's personal performance in accordance with the Finnish University Salary System. A typical starting salary for a Research assistant is 2100 EUR per month. The salary increases based on experience.
