Postdoctoral Researcher (Physics/Photonics) / Tutkijatohtori (Fysiikka/Fotoniikka)

Tampere University and Tampere University of Applied Sciences create a unique environment for multidisciplinary, inspirational, and high-impact research and education. Our university community has its competitive edges in technology, health, and society.

The Faculty of Engineering and Natural Sciences (ENS) is a leading research institution in nanoscience in Finland and hosts a well-equipped cleanroom dedicated to nanofabrication. The Nanophotonics group conducts experimental research on the fabrication of photonic nanostructures and develops unconventional nanofabrication methods.

Job description

We offer a position for a Postdoctoral researcher in developing polymer waveguides for biosensing. The position is connected with an EU-project REAP, which is developing imaging systems across multiple scales to reveal drug-tolerant persister cells. Some of the project work will be done in close collaboration with the Austrian Institute of Technology (AIT) and the Medical University of Vienna. Our task is to develop an extremely sensitive micro-ring resonator-based detector for photoacoustic imaging. The work comprises mainly fabrication of the chip, numerical modeling, installation of optical fiber connections, and optical characterization of the fabricated components. The position is supervised by Assoc. Prof. Tapio Niemi and is placed at the Laboratory of Photonics within the Physics Unit of ENS.

We are looking for highly motivated and enthusiastic candidates who have recently completed a Ph. D. degree in optics or photonics, physics, electrical engineering, or related subjects.

The position also requires:

  • Good English language skills (spoken and written)
  • Ability to conduct systematic scientific research
  • Ability to work in a team and communicate clearly in a multidisciplinary and international environment

Previous experience in the following areas is beneficial: micro- or nanofabrication techniques in a clean room environment, optical waveguides and integrated optics, optical measurement techniques, and numerical modeling.

We offer

We are inviting you to be a part of a vibrant, active and truly international research community. We value interdisciplinarity, as it allows you to expand your research network and exposes you to new perspectives and ideas to solve complex research problems and pursue novel research findings. We are strongly committed to the highest level of scientific research.

The positions will be filled for a fixed-term period of a maximum of 2 years. The starting date will be mutually agreed upon. A trial period of six months applies to all our new employees.

The salary will be based on both the job requirements and the employee's personal performance in accordance with the Finnish University Salary System. A typical starting salary for a Post-Doctoral Researcher is around 3500 EUR per month. The salary increases based on experience.

We offer a wide range of staff benefits, such as occupational health care, flexible working hours, excellent sports facilities on campus, and several restaurants and cafés on campus with staff discounts. Please read more about working at Tampere University.
