The Wireless Communications and Positioning research group in the department of Electrical Engineering at Tampere University, Tampere, Finland, is an active and vibrant research group consisting of 6 professors, 10 senior researchers or post-docs, and around 25-30 postgraduate students. The group conducts high-impact theoretical and experimental research in topics spanning from wireless communications fundamentals and advanced radio access solutions to signal processing algorithms and radio positioning. We actively collaborate with leading research institutions and groups both nationally and internationally.

We are now kicking off a new Academy of Finland funded research project on the positioning and location-aware communications for future mobile networks. The project goal is to develop new high-efficiency mobile-network-based positioning solutions and location-aware radio resource management approaches for the needs of future mobile networks, especially considering on the ongoing 5G development.

We are seeking a highly motivated postdoctoral research fellow with a strong background in communications or electrical engineering, or signal processing.

JOB DESCRIPTION

The project goal is to develop efficient positioning methods and location-aware radio resource management approaches for future mobile networks. Moreover, the main research objectives, and correspondingly the research topics included in the work, comprise:

  • Developing a comprehensive positioning solutions, which are able to work seamlessly with the underlying communication system without increasing the signaling overhead

  • Enabling ubiquitous high-accuracy positioning and tracking algorithms, which are able to operate in various use case scenarios, including line-of-sight and non-line-of-sight scenarios for both indoors and outdoors

  • Generating effective location-aware radio resource management approaches for interference management and radio link optimization in future mobile networks

  • Revealing the effect of positioning accuracy on the location-aware RRM functionalities, especially focusing on location-based beamforming, considering both communication theoretical and practical implementation aspects

  • Verifying the performance of the developed positioning and location-aware RRM approaches by conducting an empirical measurement campaign based on available 5G test network provided by the industrial partners of the project

During the project, based on the achieved research results, preparing and writing scientific publications to recognized scientific journals and international scientific conferences is considered essential part of the work. Furthermore, the project work includes collaboration with both academic and industrial partners, including researchers from Chalmers University of Technology, Gothenburg, Sweden, and Nokia Bell Labs. Thus, intercultural cooperation, travelling and research visits are expected during the project.

Participation in teaching courses at the department of Electrical Engineering is possible and encouraged. 

REQUIREMENTS

Potential candidates hold a Ph.D. degree in a relevant discipline (communications engineering, electrical engineering, signal processing) and are passionate to learn and study positioning methods and location-aware communications for future mobile networks. They have good communication skills with proficient level of English, and are able to work in a team, while are also able to conduct scientific research at a high level. Experience in positioning and tracking methods or in location-aware communications are considered an advantage. 

We will properly introduce newcomers to the work and guide you throughout the project.

WE OFFER

The position will be filled for a fixed-term period, until August 31st, 2023. The starting date is at the earliest October 1st, 2019, and at the latest, February 1st, 2020. A trial period of six months applies to all our new employees.

The salary will be based on both the job requirements and the employee's personal performance in accordance with the Finnish University Salary System. A typical starting salary for a postdoc is between 3500-4000 €, depending on previous experience.
