The research group of Superconductivity and Modeling in the unit of Electrical Engineering at the Faculty of Information and Communication Technology at the Tampere University (Finland) focuses in advancing the fields of superconducting magnet design, fabrication and testing. Our vision is a deep understanding of the phenomena related to the electromagnetics, thermodynamics and mechanical behavior of superconducting devices in operation. We work in tight collaboration with CERN and other world-leading superconducting magnet development laboratories. We are now starting an Academy of Finland funded project related to design of a 20 T magnet based on high-temperature superconductor (HTS) technology. We are seeking for highly motivated Doctoral Researcher and Postdoctoral Research Fellow with a strong background in electrical or mechanical engineering, physics, or computer modeling. 


The work will be divided and adjusted for the two researchers based on their interests and backgrounds. The main tasks include:

  • Participation in testing of HTS tapes, cables, and coils, and analysis of measurement data 

  • Development of simulation models to predict magnet and cable thermodynamic behavior during operation and fault scenarios

  • Investigation of mechanical behavior of HTS cables in high field magnets

  • Design of novel superconducting magnet concepts for realizing 20 T HTS magnets

You will work in collaboration with researchers from CERN, and possibly other laboratories abroad. Therefore, work includes traveling and intercultural collaboration.

Participation in teaching courses at the unit of Electrical Engineering is possible and encouraged. 


The successful candidates hold a M.Sc./Ph.D. in relevant disciplines (physics, electrical engineering, mechanical engineering, material science) and are enthusiastic to learn about superconductivity, cryogenics, and magnet design. They are good at communicating and working in a team, while able to conduct scientific research. Experience in at least one of the following is a definite advantage: thermodynamic or electromagnetics modeling, particle accelerator magnets, magnet design, FEM, computer simulations, programming, mechanical analysis and design, quench analysis, testing superconducting wires, cables or magnets in a laboratory.

Superconducting magnets are a very specific technology, and previous experience with them is not necessary. We will give a good introduction to the new-comers and guide during the work. 


The position will be filled for a fixed-term period, with an end date of 31.8.2023. The starting date will be mutually agreed, but preferably between 1st of October and 1st December 2019. A trial period of six months applies to all our new employees.

The salary will be based on both the job requirements and the employee's personal performance in accordance with the Finnish University Salary System. A typical starting salary for Doctoral Researcher is about 2300 EUR per month and it will increase during the studies depending on the progress (up to 3100 EUR per month). The salary for a Postdoctoral Research Fellow starts typically from 3 500 EUR per month, and increases based on experience.
