Etsimme Sovelletun matematiikan alueelle tenure track –tutkijaa (Assistant Professor), tenure track-professoria (Associate Professor)  tai professoria

Tehtävä sijoittuu Informaatioteknologian ja viestinnän tiedekunnassa Tietotekniikan yksikköön (CS).  Tietotekniikan yksikkömme on monitieteinen osaamiskeskittymä, jossa tutkimus- ja opetusalueet kattavat laajasti ICT-aluetta. Osaamisalueemme ulottuu teoreettisesta perustutkimuksesta teknologian soveltamiseen.  Tutkimuksemme kattaa sekä perus- että soveltavan tutkimuksen. Etsimme henkilöä vahvistamaan ja laajentamaan CS yksikön osaamista ja tutkimusta erityisesti matemaattisen analyysin alueella. Tehtävä linkittyy erityisesti, mutta ei ainoastaan,  Inversio-ongelmien tutkimusryhmään, joka on osa kansallista Inversiomallintamisen ja kuvantamisen huippuyksikköä 2018-2025.   


Etsimme motivoitunutta ja ansioitunutta tutkijaa, joka haluaa aktiivisella ja innovatiivisella otteella kehittää sovelletun matematiikan tutkimusta ja opetusta yhteistyössä muiden kanssa. Tehtävän painopistealue voi vaihdella asiantuntemuksesi mukaan keskittyen esimerkiksi seuraaviin teemoihin:

  • Matemaattinen mallinnus
  • Matemaattinen data-analyysi
  • Inversio-ongelmat 
  • Laskennallinen matematiikka

Olemme laajasti kiinnostuneita akateemisista asiantuntijoista, jotka soveltavat matematiikkaa eri alueilla, esimerkiksi, fysiikassa, biologiassa, sosiologiassa, psykologiassa, biolääketieteessä, kuvantamisessa, insinööritieteissä, taloudessa tai tekoälyn alueella. Myös muut sovellusalat voivat tulla kyseeseen, sillä olemme ensisijaisesti kiinnostuneita löytämään vahvan matemaattisen taustan omaavan asiantuntijan riippumatta sovellusalueesta. 

Pääperiaatteena tietotekniikan yksikössä ja matematiikan alueella Tampereen yliopistossa on rikkoa rajoja ja etsiä poikkitieteellisiä mahdollisuuksia hyödyntäen matematiikkaa sateenvarjotieteenä. Tehtävään valittavan henkilön odotetaan antavan panoksensa matematiikan alueen kehitykseen uudessa yliopistossa.  Tehtävässä on ainutlaatuinen mahdollisuus tutkimuksen tekemiseen ja opettamiseen uudenlaisessa ympäristössä ja tilaisuus kehittää edellä käyviä projekteja.

Tenure track position in Applied Mathematics

The higher education community of Tampere University and Tampere University of Applied Sciences, Finland’s second largest multidisciplinary higher education institution, places its faith in human potential and scientific knowledge. We are now seeking an assistant professor, associate professor or full professor in the field of Applied Mathematics.

The position is placed in the Faculty of Information Technology and Communication Sciences at Tampere University. The Computing Sciences Unit (CSU) of the faculty is a multidisciplinary hub for research, teaching and learning across a wide range of topics in ICT. We carry out both basic and applied research. The successful candidate will be expected to strengthen and expand the research carried out at CSU in the context of mathematical analysis, typically related to (but not limited to) the general field of the Inverse Problems research team, which is part of the national Centre of Excellence in Inverse Modelling and Imaging 2018-2025.

Job description

We are seeking a highly motivated and accomplished researcher who will be an active and innovative co-builder of our research and teaching in applied mathematics. The final profile of the position can be tailored according to your specific expertise and may include, for example, the following areas: 

  • mathematical modelling
  • mathematical data analysis
  • inverse problems
  • computational mathematics

We are widely interested in academic experts who apply mathematics in different fields, for example in physics, biology, sociology, psychology, biomedicine, imaging, engineering, finance or artificial intelligence. Other application areas of mathematics are also possible as we are primarily interested in finding an expert with a strong mathematical background irrespective of the field.  

The guiding principle of CSU and the Mathematics Unit at Tampere University is to break barriers, seek interdisciplinary opportunities and use mathematics as an umbrella science. The successful candidate will be expected to contribute to the general development of mathematics in the new university. This is a unique opportunity to mould and direct research and teaching in a fresh environment and pursue new ground-breaking projects.

In general, our tenure track staff are expected to: 

  • pursue and supervise scientific research in the field,
  • lead, conduct and develop research-led teaching, curriculum development and student supervision
  • seek, secure and manage research funding
  • demonstrate effective academic leadership and engage with external stakeholders 


Assistant Professor

We require:

  • applicable doctoral degree
  • ability to undertake independent scholarly activity and potential to pursue scholarly activity at a high international level of excellence  
  • teaching skills required to successfully perform the duties and functions of the position.

Associate Professor

We require:

  • applicable doctoral degree
  • track record of independent scholarly activity
  • teaching skills required to successfully perform the duties and functions of the position 
  • ability to lead a research group and acquire external funding
  • track record of international scholarly activity.


We require:

  • applicable doctoral degree
  • high-level scholarly expertise
  • experience of leading scientific research
  • ability to provide high-quality research-based education and instruction 
  • track record of winning external research funding  
  • track record of international scholarly activity

We will expect you to demonstrate how your profile aligns with the strategy of Tampere University and the Faculty of Information Technology and Communication Sciences and describe how you would work in a multidisciplinary environment. Ideally, for more senior level appointments, you will have experience of leading or making a major contribution to a research group. 

We offer

Initial appointment as an assistant professor and associate professor will be for five years. Subject to successful performance, you will become a tenured faculty member at the end of the first five-year period. You will be well supported throughout the five-year period to ease your transition to a tenured position. Full professors will hold a permanent appointment from the outset. A trial period of six months applies to all our new employees.

Salaries are based on the job demands and employees’ personal performance in accordance with the Finnish University Salary System. The starting salary range will be from €4,000 to €4,200/month for an assistant professor, from €4,600 to €4,900/month for an associate professor and from €5,600 to €5,800 EUR/month for a professor. A higher salary may be agreed upon based on the successful candidate’s experience and/or performance.
