The Global Health group is an international, multidisciplinary research group that aims to improve maternal and child health globally. We are part of Faculty of Medicine and Health Technology. Many of our current research projects are formed around clinical trials, but with significant biomedical, public health, and social science components. By combining the various approaches, we wish to produce new knowledge on molecular, environmental and social events leading to health, test new interventions to prevent or manage certain conditions, and provide evidence on the social, economic, and political acceptability of possible interventions.

We are now inviting applications for Postdoctoral Research Fellow position to work on a clinical trial generating evidence on mass-drug administration (MDA) of azithromycin for reducing mortality of young children in Mali.

Job description 

We are looking for a postdoctoral research fellow to work as a counterpart for Malian medical doctors and participate in various aspects of data collection. Her / his major responsibility will be to plan data collection procedures and forms for the main outcome of the trial and growth outcome. S/he will also participate in training and retraining of study team members, especially data collectors, on study procedures. Together with a laboratory post-doctoral researcher, s/he will assess monthly data collection reports, and do general monitoring of the trial. We assume that s/he will spend considerable share of her / his time in Mali, preferably in Kayes area.

The postdoctoral fellow will have an opportunity to develop and work also on other research and development projects and to participate in teaching and supervising BSc, MSc and PhD students. It is expected that research to be carried out by the postdoctoral researcher will result in peer-reviewed articles published in academic journals. 

Requirements  

We are seeking a researcher with a doctoral degree in medicine or other health related sciences, preferably a clinical background and research experience as evidenced by first authorship articles. We may also consider a candidate with a Master’s degree and a strong working experience in low-income settings. Because of the research focus is on reducing child mortality understanding related mechanisms, it will be an asset if the applicant has previous experience on biology or sociology of child health in low-income settings. A successful candidate must be able to do duty-travel to Sub-Saharan Africa.

We Offer 

The position will be filled for a fixed-term period, until the end of 2023. The planned starting date is 1st of January 2020 or as mutually agreed. A trial period of six months applies to all our new employees.

The salary will be based on both the job requirements and the employee's personal performance in accordance with the Finnish University Salary System. A typical starting salary for a postdoc is between 3300-3600 EUR/month, depending on previous experience.

Tutkijatohtori osallistuu laajaan Länsi-Afrikan Malissa toteutettavaan tutkimusprojektiin.  Projektissa selvitetään, voidaanko alle vuoden ikäisten lasten korkeaa kuolleisuutta vähentää tarjoamalla oireettomille lapsille atsitromysiini-nimistä antibioottia.
