We are now seeking an assistant professor, associate professor or full professor in the field of Information Studies. 

The position is located in the Faculty of Information Technology and Communication Sciences. The Communication Sciences Unit conducts research that delves into our increasingly digital media landscape and the role of communication technologies in reshaping not only our thoughts and sensibilities but also our relations with others. Our three research centers (COMET, TRIM and T7) create new knowledge of the impact of publicity, gamification and theatre on our society and culture. Students admitted to our multidisciplinary degree programme in communications acquire a broad base of knowledge and go on to pursue careers in journalism, media research, information research and speech communication. Our degree programme in theatre arts brings together artistic, professional and societal perspectives.  


Job description

We are seeking a highly motivated and accomplished academic who will be an active and innovative co-builder of the research and teaching area of Information Studies. The final profile of the position can be tailored according to your specific expertise and can include for example the following themes: 

  • information retrieval

  • information search

  • information systems science

  • information interaction

  • information architecture 

In this position you are expected to: 

  • pursue and supervise scientific research in the field,

  • lead, conduct and develop research-led teaching, curriculum development and student supervision in the field 

  • seek, win and manage research funding

  • demonstrate effective academic leadership engaging with external stakeholders 

In line with the spearhead profile of the university, research within information studies at Tampere examines phenomena, techniques and concepts related to information sharing, organization, use, retrieval, searching, and withholding. The selected person will lead the Finnish Information Retrieval Experts (FIRE) research group at the Tampere Research Center for Information and Media (TRIM), and participate in the teaching and supervision of students within the area of information studies.


Requirements


Assistant Professor

We require:

  • applicable doctoral degree

  • ability to undertake independent scholarly activity and potential to pursue scholarly activity at a high international level of excellence  

  • teaching skills required to successfully perform the duties and functions of the position.


Associate Professor

We require:

  • applicable doctoral degree

  • track record of independent scholarly activity

  • teaching skills required to successfully perform the duties and functions of the position 

  • ability to lead a research group and acquire external funding

  • track record of international scholarly activity.


Professor

We require:

  • applicable doctoral degree

  • high-level scholarly expertise

  • experience of leading scientific research

  • ability to provide high-quality research-based education and instruction 

  • track record of winning external research funding  

  • track record of international scholarly or artistic activity

We are looking for demonstrable evidence of a suitability with the strategy of Tampere University and the Faculty and a description of how you would work in a multidisciplinary environment. Ideally, for more senior level appointments, you will have experience of leading or making a major contribution to a research group. You need to be fluent in English in order to be able to manage the position.


We offer

Initial appointment for assistant professor and for associate professor is for five years and subject to successful performance. You will become a tenured member of the Faculty staff at the end of the first five-year period. You will be well-supported throughout the five-year period to ease transition to Faculty positions. Full professors will hold a permanent appointment from the outset. A trial period of six months applies to all our new employees.

Salaries are based on the job demands and on employees’ personal performance in accordance with the Finnish University Salary System. The minimum starting salary of an assistant professor will range between 3970-4600 EUR/month, salary of an associate professor between 4700-5200EUR/month and salary of a professor between 5500-6300 EUR/month. Higher salaries may be agreed dependent upon experience and/or performance.

Tehtävät sijoittuvat Informaatioteknologian ja viestinnän tiedekunnassa Viestintätieteiden yksikköön.  Viestintätieteiden yksikössä pureudumme digitalisoituvaan mediaympäristöön ja viestintäteknologioiden ihmisten välisiä suhteita, ajatuksia ja aistimellisuutta eri tavoin muokkaavaan rooliin. Yksikön kolme tutkimusyksikköä (COMET, TRIM ja T7) tuottavat ymmärrystä julkisuuden, pelillisyyden ja teatterin merkityksestä yhteiskunnassa ja kulttuurissa. Viestinnän monitieteinen tutkinto-ohjelma kouluttaa journalistiikan, mediatutkimuksen, informaatiotutkimuksen ja puheviestinnän laaja-alaisia osaajia. Teatterityön tutkinnossa puolestaan kohtaavat taiteellinen, ammatillinen ja yhteiskunnallinen näkökulma.
