Postdoctoral Research Fellow/Senior Research Fellow (Centre of Excellence in the History of Experiences)

We are inviting applications for a two-year position of Postdoctoral Research Fellow/Senior Research Fellow starting earliest August 1, 2020 and latest January 1, 2021. The position is located in HEX – Academy of Finland Centre of Excellence in the History of Experiences at the Faculty of Social Sciences

HEX is an international research centre that focuses on theoretical and empirical study on experiences in history. HEX has three overlapping research teams, which are Lived Religion, Lived Nation, and Lived Welfare State. Researchers at HEX combine the history of experiences with a variety of different approaches: e.g. the history of emotions; welfare and nationalism studies; history of religion; social movements; study of hagiography; gender history; oral history; digital humanities; and the history of childhood and youth. Research is not limited to any specific period or regional part of the world but emphasizes comparative approach. 

Job description 

To strengthen our team, we are looking for a talented and highly motivated PhD to conduct independent research with other HEX scholars and focus on research themes relevant for HEX’s goals. The contract will include a minor teaching duty to be agreed separately. Researchers with a doctoral degree in all stages of academic career are eligible to apply.


Senior Research Fellow:

  • applicable doctoral degree
  • track record of independent scholarly activity
  • teaching skills required to successfully perform the duties and functions of the position
  • ability to lead a research group and acquire external funding

Postdoctoral Research Fellow:

  • applicable doctoral degree
  • capacity for independent scholarly activity
  • teaching skills required to successfully perform the duties and functions of the position

In addition, the following will be considered an advantage:

  • activity and versatility as a researcher
  • merits in international research collaboration and publication 
  • ability to combine theoretical and empirical approaches, interest in methodological development
  • commitment for promoting HEX’s research agenda

 We offer

Appointment as Postdoctoral Research Fellow or Senior Research Fellow starts September 1, 2020 at the earliest and January 1, 2021 at the latest. A trial period of six months applies to all of our new employees. 

Salaries are based on the job demands and employees’ personal performance in accordance with the Finnish University Salary System. The minimum starting salary of a Postdoctoral Research Fellow  will range between 3400-3900 EUR/month and salary of a Senior Research Fellow between 4000-4500 EUR/month. Higher salaries may be agreed dependent upon experience and/or performance.
