We are looking for a highly motivated doctoral researcher to work on spatial analysis of acoustic scenes from audio recordings. The position is situated in the Audio and Speech Processing Research Group of Tampere University, part of the Signal Processing Research Center at the Faculty of Information Technology and Communication Sciences (ITC)

JOB DESCRIPTION

The successful candidate will pursue a doctoral degree in the Doctoral Programme of Computing and Electrical Engineering (DPCEE). The offered contract at TAU is for 24 months, with possible extension. The overall direction of the research is outlined below. However, both the research focus and responsibilities will be customized to align with the candidate's skills, experience, and interests. The position also involves collaboration within a multidisciplinary team to push the boundaries of current knowledge and technology in this field, publishing research findings in reputable journals, presenting at international conferences, and possibly including a few months of mobility to a non-Finnish university or research institute for collaborative work.

The doctorate’s overall area of research is on spatial and temporal analysis of acoustic scenes, extracting information about semantic, temporal, and spatial attributes of sound-producing sources or agents in the scene, and potentially acoustic characteristics of the surrounding environment. This area is important for a wide number of emerging applications. Some of those are intelligent acoustic monitoring for urban environments, care homes, or industrial sites, machine understanding of the surrounding environment and actions in it from multiple modalities including audio, robotic navigation towards critical sounds, and intelligent environmental sound processing in wearable audio devices and/or hearing aids.
The doctoral candidate will focus on investigating specific problems in the above research topic and pushing the current state-of-the-art. Related problems include generalization of methods, integration of visual information, scaling to large-scale unlabeled recordings, and studying performance in practical device form-factors. Collection and curation of recordings of natural scenes that can serve the above research tasks is also expected to be conducted during the doctorate. Finally, the candidate is expected to get involved with the respective research community and potentially participate in organization of related actions, such as the Detection and Classification of Acoustic Scenes and Events (DCASE) challenge.

The Doctoral student will be supervised by Assistant Professor Archontis Politis.

  • The applicant needs to have a master’s degree or equivalent in a field related to the position, such as computer science, signal processing, machine learning, media or communications technology, and have demonstrated (during their studies towards the master’s degree or otherwise) the competence and motivation to pursue postgraduate studies.
  • The successful candidate needs to apply for and be granted a study right for a doctoral degree in the Doctoral Programme of Computing and Electrical Engineering (DPCEE) at Tampere University. Please visit the admissions webpage for more information on eligibility requirements. Please pay special attention to the language requirements.
  • The applicant should have experience with Python and deep learning frameworks such as Pytorch or Tensorflow.
  • Additional knowledge about acoustics, audio signal processing, spatial audio, and/or computer vision is highly desirable.
  • Specific knowledge or experience in research tasks such as sound source localization and tracking, sound event detection, acoustic geometry inference, joint audiovisual processing are also preferred qualifications.
  • Additional skills that are highly appreciated in this position are the willingness to work hard in a cross-sector and multi-cultural environment, ability to work both independently and in a team, and interest in a research career.
