We are now seeking an assistant, associate, or full professor in the field of Signal Processing and Machine Learning. The position is placed in the  Signal Processing Research Center  at Tampere University, Faculty of Information Technology and Communication Sciences, unit of Computing Sciences. The Signal Professing Research Center hosts 11 professors and about 90 staff members. It has been the site of Academy of Finland Centres of Excellence and has made numerous globally major contributions in its core strength areas, which include imaging, audio and speech processing, computer vision, and applied machine learning.  Our staff includes world-class scientists, ERC grantees, Academy Research Fellows, and editors of top international journals. Our research and teaching combine theory, models, and algorithms for analyzing, interpreting, capturing, and reproducing complex natural signals, with the aim to support a wide range of applications with high social relevance. 


Job description  

To support our competitiveness, we are looking for a talented and enthusiastic candidate to fill a tenure track professor position (assistant, associate, or full professor) in the broader area of Signal Processing and Machine Learning. We value research excellence and strong methodological skills from some domain related to Signal Processing and Machine Learning, and understanding of phenomena broadly within that domain, which can range from real-world mechanisms producing signals, methods for processing and interpreting them, and their use in applications. An ideal candidate is a world-leading expert in their own research topic, who will renew the current expertise of the research centre. Our tenure track professors are expected to pursue and supervise scientific research in their field; lead, conduct and develop research-led teaching, curriculum development and student supervision; seek, secure and manage research funding from different sources, such as Research Council of Finland and EU instruments; demonstrate effective academic leadership and engage with external stakeholders. 

 

Requirements  

Assistant Professor  

We require:  

  • applicable doctoral degree  

  • ability to undertake independent scholarly activity and potential to pursue scholarly activity at a high international level of excellence    

  • willingness and interest to establish a research group and acquire external funding  

 

Associate Professor  

We require:  

  • applicable doctoral degree  

  • track record of independent scholarly activity  

  • teaching skills required to successfully perform the duties and functions of the position   

  • ability to lead a research group and acquire external funding  

  • track record of international scholarly activity.  

 

Professor  

We require:  

  • applicable doctoral degree  

  • high-level scholarly expertise  

  • experience of leading a scientific research  

  • ability to provide high-quality research-based education and instruction   

  • track record of acquiring external research funding    

  • track record of international scholarly activity  

 

We will expect you to demonstrate how your profile aligns and complements the profile of Signal Processing Research Center. Potential for industry collaboration will be considered an advantage.   

 

We offer  

Initial appointment as assistant professor and as associate professor is for five years and, subject to successful performance you will become a tenured member of faculty staff at the end of the first five-year period. You will be supported throughout the five-year period to ease transition to faculty positions. Full professors will hold a permanent appointment from the outset. Salaries are based on the job demands and employees’ personal performance in accordance with the Finnish University Salary System. The minimum starting salary of an assistant professor will range between 4300 - 5000 EUR/month, salary of an associate professor between 5000 - 5800 EUR/month and salary of a professor between 6000 - 7000 EUR/month. Higher salaries may be agreed dependent upon experience and/or performance.

Tehtävään valittu henkilö johtaa tutkimusryhmää ja tutkimusta omalla alallaan, vastaa oman alansa opetuksesta ja opinnäytetöiden ohjauksesta sekä tukee signaalinkäsittelyn muuta opetusta. Työhön kuuluu myös tutkimusrahoituksen hankkiminen.
