The Theory of Quantum Matter and Information Group at the Faculty of Engineering and Natural Sciences, Tampere University, Finland, is pleased to announce the opening of a Doctoral Researcher position focused on the topic of Topology and Entanglement in Complex Quantum Systems. This presents an opportunity to conduct scientific research at the forefront of the fields of theoretical condensed-matter physics and quantum information.

Job description

Over the past two decades, topological states of matter have taken a prominent role within both condensed-matter physics and quantum information theory. The macroscopic quantum-mechanical properties protected by the bulk topology in these systems produce effects that are not only exotic but also, at least in theory, robust to most local perturbations. With promising prospects within diverse areas ranging from energy storage to the engineering of robust qubits, the potential applications within future technology seem almost limitless and continue to spur further interest in the field. The goal of the research is to advance our theoretical understanding of the wide range of phenomena arising at this intersection between condensed matter and quantum information.

Successful candidates will pursue a doctoral degree at Tampere University. While the general direction of the project research is described by the above, the specific skill set and interests of the candidate will contribute towards determining the specific details of the research to be undertaken. The candidate is expected to collaborate with the group to produce new research that is published in high-quality peer-reviewed journals and to engage with the greater research community by attending international conferences.

Requirements

Applicants are expected to meet the following criteria:

  • Educational Qualification: Must hold a Master’s degree in theoretical physics or a related field at the time of application.
  • Academic Background: A background in theoretical physics with focus on condensed-matter physics or quantum information is essential.
  • Technical Proficiency: Strong skills in MATLAB or Python-based programming will be an advantage.
  • Language Skills: Proficiency in both written and spoken English is required. Applicants should possess excellent communication and interpersonal skills. Proficiency in Finnish is not required.
  • Working Style: Ability to work both independently and as part of a team. Candidates should demonstrate a balance of autonomy and collaborative skills.

Successful candidates must be pursuing or will be accepted to study towards a doctoral degree in the doctoral programme of the discipline. Please visit the admissions webpage https://www.tuni.fi/en/study-with-us/programmes/doctoral-programmes for more information on eligibility requirements.
